Photography Tips

• Avoid using your flash. Using natural light makes your photos more... well, natural looking. Flash washes out your colors and makes backgrounds very dark. Use a tripod if your images are blurry from not using flash.

• Explore your subject from different angles. Don't always default to taking pictures from above your subject.

• Stuck on the theme? Try looking up the word in a dictionary or thesaurus to get some other synonyms that might spark your imagination.

We are very pleased to be hosting our first photography contest here at Maidens of Virtue! We are really looking forward to seeing some great entries.

This is going to be a year long contest (meaning we will be accepting entries through December 2010). This will give photographers all the seasons and plenty of time to take photographs.

- Eligibility -

This contest is open to all ages, and there is only one category, as I think that children are quite as capable of taking photos that can compete with adults.

- Theme -

The theme for this contest is one word: Pure. I wish I could enter this contest myself because I've been thinking of all the different ways this word can be portrayed in photographs! Be creative and use your imagination; think outside the box and come up with as many different ways to apply "Pure" to a photo subject.

Entries will be judged on photo quality, composition, lighting, and originality of interpreting the theme. We are more interested in seeing your skill as a photographer than your ability to use Photoshop. :-)

- Awards & Prizes -

We will award one First Place winner, and several finalists. First Place prize information is forthcoming; you have a year to come up with submissions, and I have a year to come up with a prize! :-) Interested in contributing a product or supporting the contest financially? See the sidebar for details!

You may enter as many photos as you want, at any time during the year (so you could enter photos as you take them, or save them and submit them all at the end). You will only be eligible to win one physical prize, though multiple photos of yours may be awarded finalist.

- Rules -

This contest is FREE to enter; we would, however, appreciate a small donation to go toward the first place prize (this is not required to be entered in the contest).

Entries must be emailed by December 31, 2010. Entries emailed after this date will be disregarded. Electronic submissions only are being accepted at this time.

All entries must be the original work of the entrant. Photo editing is allowed for: contrast, exposure, and sharpness. You are permitted to submit black & white, and sepia tint photos. You may add a copyright watermark to your photos if you wish, but please make it fairly small and in an inconspicuous corner so it does not detract from the photo.

Entrants under the age of eighteen must have the permission of their parent(s) or guardian to enter the contest.

Entrants retain all rights to their work and are free to use or publish them elsewhere if they desire.

HOW TO ENTER: Click HERE to enter your photo via our online form! You may do this in one of two ways: 1. Attach the file in JPEG format or 2. Post the photo online (blog, website, etc.) and send us the link to the image (please link directly to the post or page where you have placed the image, not just the basic web address - i.e. "maidensofvirtue.com/mypicture" versus just "maidensofvirtue.com"). Please title the file with the title of your photo and/or your name (i.e. "Waterfall-SarahJones.jpg").

- Notification -

You will be notified by email when we receive your entry.*

First Place winner will be contacted on or before January 15, 2011. Winner and finalists will be announced on MaidensOfVirtue.com and on The Girlhood Gazette blog, on January 15, 2011.
